Your Money Story & Your Relationship with Money and Why It’s so Important
We all have stories, thoughts, beliefs, patterns and behaviours around money. Things that we’ve picked up along the way, through our childhood, through what we’ve absorbed from the people around us and the society we grew up in.
These significantly impact our financial reality and our ability to create financial freedom. So many of us heard things like money doesn’t grow on trees, we can’t afford that, it’s rude to talk about money, they only have money because they manipulate people, money doesn’t make you happy, pay attention at school so you can get good grades, go to university and get a good job.
Often we’re walking around blind when it comes to what our beliefs about money are. A great place to start to uncover yours, is to ask yourself these questions:
- What are your memories around money?
- Was money a cause of stress or tension in your household? Or was it never spoken about?
- What language did your caregivers use when talking about money?
- What did you learn about money growing up?
- Did you ever feel financially judged or less than others?
- What is your relationship with money like now? How do you feel about money now? What emotions come up?
- What is working well around money?
- What would you like to improve around money?
- What about money is empowering?
- What about money is challenging?
Going through these questions will help you dig deep and understand your beliefs around money.
Often, we’ve not even considered that we have a relationship with money, let alone that it could be disempowering. So much is buried deep in our subconscious that we aren’t even aware of. You may have formed beliefs like you can’t have love and money or you can have a happy family life OR wealth not both.
Our beliefs and relationship with money create our money blocks. Things like being in a lack or scarcity mindset around money, burying your head in the sand and not looking at your numbers and thinking that simply earning more money will make you wealthy and solve all your problems.
Becoming conscious of your money thoughts, beliefs and patterns is the first step, it’s then a matter of re-programming those beliefs to one’s that are more empowering and supportive of your dreams. It’s one of the most underrated and powerful things you can do on your journey to creating financial freedom.
